secret bruise and robo-recommendation

In even more small press poetry chapbook news & views (and scroll down one entity for even more) and I'm talking about the views of ghost girls and dolls and porkers and robots and more more more...

My 2008 Blood Pudding Press chapbook 'Planchette' has recently been reviewed by poet Sarah Sarai on her fabulous and multifaceted writerly blog called 'My 3000 Loving Arms' (Ganesh has got nothing on Sarah Sarai). Here's an excerpt from her review:

"While hypomania is a 'mild mania' I have heard in arenas more esoteric than Webster's, hippomancy to be linked to divination. Which brings me back to that early girl. Whether the blue pills are valium or more 'narcotic,' in the poem they serve as emblem of the 'secret bruise' Cook writes of, of the 'Dream of white fizz' and its powers.

I'm figuring 'white fizz' can nullify the bruise. Pills do what pills will do. Mind will continue to struggle, as will spirit, thank God. Hence, poetry. The fizz feels chemical, feels alchemical, and that's part of Cook's intention, to draw the reader into a mysterious, suspect but real world."

You may read her review in its entirety (including excerpts from some of the tome's poems) on the aforementioned blog, here:

I will also be making a few more little personal comments about this review soon, upon my blog, DOPPELGANGRENE.

Speaking of my poetry chapbooks, my latest, FONDANT PIG ANGST is coming soon. If you don't believe me, you can see for yourself on the Slash Pine Press site, here:

http://slashpinepress.blogspot.com/2009/11/its-coming.html

If you want a little teaser about this book's squeamishness-inducing innards, here's a blurb written by a robot:

I came to Juliet Cook's collection, Fondant Pig Angst, for glimpses into what it means to be human. I navigated my way through the detritus of the living -- took silk in my mouth, floated in a vat of tapioca, awkwardly inserted the meat hook. Cook's voice has disemboweled my assemblage, replaced my casing's wires with warped strings. If I am to believe Cook's speakers, the state of being human is nothing more than a blend of saltwater and ambergris, all in a jelly binding. I would rather remain a robot than dine at this feast, replete with cockroaches, confections and endless conditions.

Feldman happens to be the personal robot of poet Dana Guthrie Martin.

Speaking of Dana Guthrie Martin, HER new poetry chapbook, 'The Spare Room' is coming soon from Blood Pudding Press itself.

Yes.

PLANCHETTE NOW AVAILABLE

‘Planchette’ is the spooky new poetry chapbook by Juliet Cook.

If you wish to begin your New Year in the company of obscene tea cups, musty love seats, haunted girls, odd divinations, and suspicious levitations, then ‘Planchette’ might be just the peculiar concoction for you. Read it and find out if you’ll float from the floor, eyes rolling like lost marbles that used to live in the sockets of a dangerous antique doll.

‘Planchette’ contains a series of ten poems in a hand-designed, ribbon bound chapbook. Some of these petite tomes have light blue covers with sandstone-colored innards. Some of them have sandstone-colored covers with light blue innards. All of them have naughty little deckled edges.

The wondrously evocative cover image for ‘Planchette’ was created by Art and Ghosts.

Acquire it for your very own by visiting the Blood Pudding Press online shop:

'It's lovely, lovely dearie. Right creepy and dolly and your cover is TO DIE FOR!

I love your fearlessness, your something at the back of the box, your crawlspace du jour.'

Nicole Cartwright Denison, poet

'Such a wicked concoction of feverish wimpering haunted girls and dreadful spider eggs oozing within your simmering cursing tongue...overflowing with delicious and dirty delights:)

I LOVE it!

I am going to order more for gifts!

BRAVO! '

Madelyn Mulvaney

'MY GOD! I just saw the cover of "Planchette" then it turned into PANDORA'S BOX and I HAD to open it.

I read two poems.

SUPERNAL...NOT YR USUAL SUBLUNARY!

GIRL GOT CHOPZ!

THIS IS GREAT WRITING, JULIET COOK!

People, if you want to own a limited edition of great poetry which will skyrocket in value when this poet begins getting recognized for the original she is (in about eight nanoseconds most likely) contact her on here and find out how to order.

W.B. Keckler, poet

'One of my absolute favorites is Juliet Cook's new chapbook, Planchette. Juliet is one of the best poets writing today in my opinion because she isn't afraid to take risks with her work, and Planchette is all about that. Her poetry is SO VIVID and each piece evokes something fresh. Definitely check it out!'

Melissa Culbertson, poet and co-editor of blossombones

'Planchette, the title truly sets the tone for this haunting ten poem collection, as every good little goth knows this is the triangular instrument used on the Ouija board. Juliet does play soothsayer, summoning the souls of the past, the souls hidden in your great grandmother's attic, hidden behind the glass eye of the porcelain doll on the dusty shelf in your great aunt's parlor, and collects all of their pain and wisdom to give a little insight into the future. The book itself is handmade, ribbon bound and is adorned with two little pink jewels. As Juliet so devilishly puts it, "Some of these petite tomes have light blue covers with sandstone-colored innards. Some of them have sandstone-colored covers with light blue innards. All of them have naughty little deckled edges." For all of the canopy beds, spider eggs in doll eyes, snails, ooze and fizz, there is always a very genuine undertone behind all of the Gothic glitz and pale glamour. There is the humanity of the experience detailed in "Cataract" or the reality of being forced to take your medicine in "Stained Bloomers" that really drive this collection.'

Jason Behrends, editor of 'What to Wear During an Orange Alert?'

'You capture the spooky sexuality of the inanimate doll so well'

'haunting, erotic & a little gothic. Made me want to write.'

‘high-quality bordello, stinking of sex and joie de vivre’

I am pleased and excited to announce that [GROWLING SOFTLY] has received a stupendous new review by Rachel Kendall in the latest issue of ‘Sein Und Werden’.

Here is the beginning of Ms. Kendall’s delectable commentary:

‘Sumptuous, sexy, glossy, dangerous, voluptuous… are some of the words that sprang immediately to mind when I first held in my hands the new poetry chapbook from Blood Pudding Press, edited by Juliet Cook. Never have I been so undecided whether to rip open the covers of the book in front of me, like tearing the rind off a plump fruit, or put it behind glass, its own coffin, free of sticky finger tips, cigarette smoke and babies breath. It's as glossy as freshly painted lips, shiny as cut glass and just as cruelly enticing. And the title, the title, growling softly. A threat, a warning, a guttural sigh. Each copy is one of a kind, with the editrix obviously spending a lot of time and delight putting each together with ribbon and lace. The paper is sepia, a little jagged at the edges. It is high-quality bordello, stinking of sex (almost) and joie de vivre.

But, the thing is to be read. It is not here simply for my visual enjoyment. So, to its 'sticky innards', what is the poetry inside actually like? Well I won't say I savoured every piece, but out of 41, most are spine-tinglingly excellent while the rest are good. I didn't dislike a single poem, only, the subject or rhythm of some appealed more than others.

There's a whole gamut of sordid little packages here, dirty bundles of stanzas, pert verses and rancid subjects oozing from every page.’

And there’s plenty more where that came from. To experience the review in its entirety, please click here:

The entire new issue of ‘Sein Und Werden’—themed ‘What the Vulture Ate for Tea’—is worth looking into while you’re at it—steeped and teeming with twisted fairy tale poetry by the likes of Misti Rainwater-Lites (a steamy [GROWLING SOFTLY] contributor), Susan Slaviero (editor of the new ‘blossombones’, soon to publish its very first issue), Kristina Marie Darling, and many more.

Plus, ‘Planchette’ is almost here.

COMING SOON FROM BLOOD PUDDING PRESS!

Hot and hideous ferment to bend your spoons and make you swoon!

~Just in time for the New Year—PLANCHETTE—a new poetry chapbook by
Juliet Cook with cover design by the darkly wondrous Art and Ghosts. Brace yourself or prepare for the spooky embrace of haunted girls, dusty divans, odd divinations, and rather dreadful clairvoyance. Creepily floating your way in mere weeks.

~In February 2008—wing’d—a new poetry chapbook by
Kyle Simonsen. Just thinking about it makes my fingers burn until my fingerprints mutate into tiny yet very active volcanos. Buzz in the back room called this material bestial & wild & monstrous & natural & jungular & foresty & creaturific.

PLUS an upcoming new Call for Submissions (so far this is just a titillating teaser, as submissions are not being accepted yet, but soon).

Blood Pudding Press will be accepting submissions for its next one-off, multi-writer project from January 20th through March 20th 2008. The new magazine will be published some time in April 2008 and will serve as a sort of sister to
[GROWLING SOFTLY], which was published in October 2007. The new magazine will be called ECTOPLASMIC NECROPOLIS.

Remember that Blood Pudding Press specializes in poetry and artsy little misfit offerings, so preference will indeed be devoted to poetry submissions. However, in addition to poetry, I will also be willing to consider poetic flash fiction, hybrids, collaborations, poetic blog excerpts/journal entries/dream blurbs, short poetic essays, and poetry chapbook reviews.

You may familiarize yourself with Blood Pudding Press sensibilities by reading any of the press’s previously released materials, but here are a few little hints as to what the editor does and does not tend to adore.

Yes to juicy, oozing, pussycentric, monstrously feminine, horrorotic, dangerous, provocative, unsettling, queasy, postmodern, feminist, and intellectually angsty.

No to dry, didactic, derivative, tame, clichéd, or vanilla pudding.

WE WANT WEIRDLY BLENDED BLOOD PUDDING UP IN HERE.

THINK OF LIVE BOMBS PLANTED IN INNOCENT CREAM PUFFS.

THINK OF METASTASIZING EVIL TWINS.

No previously published in other print or online magazines, but posted on a personal blog is okay. Simultaneous submissions are fine; just promptly inform if any of your submitted pieces are accepted elsewhere. Submit 3-5 pieces to
JulietX@Bust.com either in the body or as one attachment and include a brief bio note. Feel free to let me know if you have queries. I will be accepting material from 15-30 different writers—and each accepted contributor will receive one complementary copy of ECTOPLASMIC NECROPOLIS.

Let the fermentation begin.
