NEW! A New Thirteen Myna Birds Flock has Arrived, in time for the end of summer/beginning of fall....

Approaching the end of summer and launching into the fall, a new issue of Thirteen Myna Birds has finally arrived!

This issue is brimming with birds. Rising, falling, burning, flying, screaming, offering warnings...

Twenty new feathers and beaks are all HERE (from Debrah Shenefelt - MISH - Merritt Waldon - Ken Poyner - László Aranyi - James Croal Jackson - Ann Randlette - Paul David Adkins - Daniel G. Snethen - A.J. Huffman) - https://13myna.blogspot.com/

Flaming fingers scratch the sky - The chickadees have stopped singing - the crows are hopping from branch to branch dropping closer waiting - to find a half-cherry in my cup of fruit cocktail - Ascending angel clings to shadows - unaware she is already melted and falling - Hollow sky - I could not count all the trees - It is more than a number of trees - a thousand bucks to screw her head onto a bolt - with needle-and-thread grass, hog-nosed snakes and sandburs - Birds pecked out the eyes - The mission of the Earth is fulfilled: the one who lands ashore is taken aim at - The altar, a split shell by a dying brushfire - The cats are out of the bag, and their fangs are mammoth - painted images in the reddened sky - staring at my near colorless fruit - How a window could frost and seal itself behind - what if some students can’t afford the book? - Songbirds screech to clouds in mourning - the doctor freezing pieces of me off - The whole place reeked of bleach - I vomit hearts drained of purpose...

NEW! The First Thirteen Myna Birds Flock of 2026 is HERE...

Yes it has been a while, but in this month of March 2026, a new Thirteen Myna Birds flock has finally arrived, the first of this year 2026!

Starting with thirteen new poems by Jason Ryberg, Donna Pucciani, Mark J. Mitchell, Joshua Walker, SJ Harrold, and Maceo Nightingale.

All HERE - http://13myna.blogspot.com/

***

"Too much reality hurt and cold facts couldn’t be climbed - Her branch has vanished - keys dangled from a skinny wrist - voices bleed downstage - in darkening offices and bedrooms all over America - guilt that moves because it must - a document now shredded - sending what’s left of their leaves to scatter in every direction - clues that get missed, like dull sets that fly to darkness - the goddamn cynics and nihilists - Red eyed rats coughed out tracking devices - Life begins as a wriggly maggot - worms slithered out a bleeding heart - The years rot slow in mason jars - sudden tragedy, or the inexplicable prospect of non-being"

***

A lot more submissions remain in the Myna Birds inbox to read and consider and respond to in phases and the tentative plan is to add MORE creative work to this Myna Birds flock at different intervals in March and April, so please do stay tuned, if so inclined.

But for now, these are your starting thirteen, which will stay up at least throughout March and April (probably even longer) with more poems and/or art added to the mix from time to time...

A NEW Fall 2025 Flock of Thirteen Myna Birds is HERE!

Happy Autumn from Thirteen Myna Birds!

Summer has segued into fall and a new flock of Thirteen Myna Birds has arrived! Currently offering 17 new poems by John Andrew Fredrick, Scott Ferry, Merritt Waldon, Luis Cuauhtémoc Berriozábal, John Grey, Denise Gilchrist, Bradford Middleton, Charlie Brice, and Wayne F Burke!

More poems shall be added throughout October too, if all goes according to plan.

"make a lantern for us to hold up, a trophy - or a branch with a raven perched on it - The gibbous moon dances - a gawking fish twisting - in those videos where time is speeded up - the plaintive trill of a cricket has coaxed a star out of the ink - smoking, Drinking and writing again - in the air, in the hot violet night air - The carpet came alive - Mind on skull raft - White dawn lily left for cemetery stone - Memory floats through time lost - the sad moon lies comatose - The house is unsettled - through my dead wires and rotting tongue - what animated the flesh has fled - Its sadness witnessed through the ages - sing my pain to sleep by whistling imaginary air - a martyr of the sky brightening the dark night - surrounding you like an immediate fractal séance"

Partake of Thirteen Myna Birds! Submit to Thirteen Myna Birds!

In late March throughout April, I managed to get 33 new pieces added to Thirteen Myna Birds and they are currently still available to read/view/listen to, so check them out while you still can.

Soon they will disappear and be replaced with new offerings.

Thirteen Myna Birds is a blog style lit mag which publishes predominantly poetry, but sometimes short fiction, art, and other creative materials too. I tend to update it once every few months, adding 13 (or more) new pieces at a time to the flock. But in honor of April being poetry month, I chose to handle it a bit differently that month and semi-sporadically kept adding more pieces throughout that month, thus it ended up reaching 33.

I hope to update the flock again sometime in May, at which point all the current offerings will disappear and be replaced, so do partake while you still can.

So far, I have three poems chosen to appear within the next flock and a handful of unread/un-responded to submissions in my inbox that I am hoping to get to soon, but I'm always accepting more submissions to consider. The guidelines appear in the middle right of the Thirteen Myna Birds page, if you wish to try to become a part of the next Thirteen Myna Birds flock.

A NEW Thirteen Myna Birds Flock has finally arrived!

Hello from Thirteen Myna Birds!

"Voice turned screechy, my soft hands, now hard claws - in the stations of silence, the static in between channels - The rain drizzles on - to be content to exist for however long - longer than the moth who burns itself out in light - she wears an officer’s silver jumpsuit, laser gun in her belt - and I explode inside - My face has changed to skull-bone, covered in a hard shell - the moment I put the pen to it the page bursts into flames - Lost in a burned prairieland - sidewalk rubbish floating up at ya like attack-ghosts - a wall that needs to be fed Blood - A tiny white flower blooms Against all the dark noises..."

It has been quite a while since a new Thirteen Myna Birds flock has arrived, but better late than never, I hope.

Within this new Thirteen Myna Birds flock, you can Spring into poetry and visual art by MISH - read some poetry by John Andrew Fredrick and listen to some music from his band, the black watch - and read some poetry by Holly Day, Wayne F Burke, Alexandra Dark, Yuan Changming, and James Moran.

Look, listen, and read it all HERE - https://13myna.blogspot.com/

***

(I'm also semi-tentatively thinking that instead of waiting months for the next new Myna Birds update, I might continually add a few new poems to this flock within the Poetry Month of April. This new flock of 21 creative contributions will stay up AT LEAST throughout the whole month of April, but additional poems might join the flock throughout that month.)

"Doom, says the old dog adjusting to the end - The cyclical madness of existence - She rose, straightened her long spine, set off for a science with no strict clocks or counters - the whippoorwill screams to a sky full of cobwebs - Nestled within, a yellow spider with a clown face upon its abdomen - Messages from other realities - Eyes white, rolling backwards into the ivory skull - where does this building end and the earth begin? - in maniacal surround clown sound - I found myself mesmerized by the grinning of the clown - The world around her is burning - Fluid rivers of furious - the sucking hungry silence of a thousand people holding their breath - A SHATTERED DEER BLEATS DESPERATELY IN A ROADSIDE DITCH - Are there any ears - I handed you the knife - To catch one winged Critter..."

the sun breaks through chunks of obsidian - to look at her drawings of flying penises - poisoned river raging in her quivering heart - metal smile awash in her spurting blood - torn apart and in darkness - In darkness my body feels less exposed - I’m tangled up with my invisible-but-evil twin - Her motionless body on the bed - not lifeless—not yet - We’ve all been poisoned - The culturally relevant now like pink Elephants & clowns - He’s got a secret fishing hole, which he currently can’t get to - She sees stars behind shaded eyes - gatekeeping foam while bodies sleep on beach blankets, tented blue dimensions - In a multidimensional multireality Multiconsciousness dream of the future - steel teeth chewing through - all strange parades of weightless flesh packed in black vinyl - In a language no one speaks - as the long shadows crawl and the tide comes in - Vibrating with muses On the edge of midnight...

Offering a twisted mass of poetry by A.M. Potter, D.E. Shupe, Joshua St. Claire, Diane Funston, Taylor Nuñez, Wayne F Burke, and Ken Poyner!

"My guts are bleeding and I'm lonely - Winter is a dragon not long slain - The clay is cracking, flaking, peeling - melody died in my throat - love is an abandoned ship - God's love is abuse - carries dissonance in fifths - cutting it up in slivers makes everyone spill their hearts out - the bleached phalanges of a trembling, titanic hand - only those ghastly phalanges know - enigmas dance behind forever closed eyelids - move through deep space in a planetary system - My hands are bound by a sky that has been dark for days - Soon, the metal, plastic And foam might appear - The radiator cries, but all else is still - the hourglass stops crying - The sky has been dark for days - as I pray for light to break the grey..."

A new flock of Thirteen Myna Birds is here! Happy Poetry Month!

It's been a little while since a new Thirteen Myna Birds flock has arrived, but now it is finally HERE. The second of this year! Happy Poetry Month! https://13myna.blogspot.com/

New poetry by Gale Acuff, F.J. Bergmann, Terry Trowbridge, E. Martin Pedersen, Beret LaBrecque, Michael Grover, Daniel Snethen, David Henson, Mike Hackney, and John Grey!

"they'll all go to Heaven when they croak but I'll go to Hell, at least I'll be special in some way - the black wings of the newborns are torn so they cannot fly - in the flower garden of goodbyes - Lurking toxins accumulating, molecule by molecule, invisible doom seeping up - grisly, no pretty words just drops of blood - as she stands before me in her bloodied apron - Fingernails cut scars across our innocence - A statue shows us frozen in agony - Straining to escape our fate - Now we're all still alive but already I'm alone and it doesn't matter where - drive me toward the pit of flaming oil - the signals of risk, like a nocturnal animal seen fearless and staggering at noon - See the battles going on around them - I mean, so much blood students smear it on themselves - the poor cat who got mauled trying to sneak her way past - Would you think you knew me better if you could see my past and future? - I have not been terrified of dying in a long time - But I am terrified of how numb I am to the idea of dying - Solipsism incarnated in balloons - sleeping with rats on the Commons - I find myself astride Envy and change horses in midstream..."

Happy New Year from Thirteen Myna Birds! Introducing the first new Myna Birds flock of 2023!

Happy New Year 2023 from Thirteen Myna Birds!

Filled with all different shapes, sizes, colors, textures, and strange, unique, individual amalgamations of poetry.

The latest new Myna Birds amalgamation is the first of 2023 and includes poetry by Michael Grover, James Croal Jackson, Mike Hackney, Juliet Cook & Darryl Shupe, Jessica Lindsley Casavant, Ken Poyner, John D. Robinson, and Jon Bennett, all HERE - https://13myna.blogspot.com/

"Poetry I have lived my life - where the highway goes divided - A child's imagination looks like the devil incarnate - The angry buzz - Trembling hands - Sit in the middle of this chaos - The reeds are a forest, though they are but three rows - on half-constructed roads, wet with already-drying rain - wherein she utters strange, guttural incantations, hoping to gut him like all the others - with heads held down in depression - just outside of awareness - where there was recently emptiness, a dread in the air - which holds yet another doomed, idle spawn inside its tangles - In an act of involuntary penance, the new models ooze blood on their way to the slaughterhouse - There’s foil confetti everywhere - Setting the past on fire - the juke box dormant - but a few broken doll parts morph into tiny voodoo dolls and start a spell - A blue basketball rolls briskly in front of my car, and two boys scream - The ghost ship leaves a trail to my door..."

The NEW Fall Flock of Thirteen Myna Birds is HERE!

The darkly delicious NEW Fall flock of Thirteen Myna Birds is HERE! Brimming with ghastly interpretations of hideous fairy tales combined with real life mini-terrors! Happy Fall filled with poetry/art from Olivia Loccisano, M. Anthony C., MISH, Kristin Garth, Oisin Farraige, John Grey, and Jason Ryberg!

"Listen carefully! - Here is a remedy and a warning for you - Dark transport, from that ranch to home - and your pinkish dress must cover your knees for this puppet has come to play - Joyful undulation bobbing - in blisters and wool, they cry out and gasp - The tree trunks have faces - I don’t know what that says about their equipment - the dough was made of girlish flesh - What lies between, beneath, The turbulent stillness - The wind’s howl gives voice to what a trespasser feels inside - as opposed to the more garden variety near death / life flashing right before your eyes - I hate this hospital - The worker’s dead skin chewed by mini mouths - each leaf of grass flames Its torpid whip on my sight - It’s a sort of merging that takes place - books and new bruises - You have no idea how they tortured me in the basement..."
(this art piece is "Sunset in a parallel world" by MISH, which appears in the new Myna Birds flock)

The NEW July Flock of Thirteen Myna Birds is HERE!

The NEW July flock of Thirteen Myna Birds has arrived! Offering poetry/art by David Henson - Wayne F Burke - MISH - Abigail Denton - Robert Beveridge - Darryl Shupe - Juliet Cook - Linda Umans.

Rats chewed through our foundation - the cadavers of all the women - the DNA particles from a lost love rise up in the feathers and re-break her heart - the crazy girl I thought I was rid of - The mother asked her daughter if she’d like to adopt another doll - The girl said she wanted one without a head - Some days I walk in the alcove between my face and my skull - Sometimes I feel like executing my brain - pages loved now crumbled - It’s no use thinking - I knew the answer before the question was asked - It wasn’t the first time I was murdered - I’m out to sea in a hurricane - the serial killer in your epiglottis sent down to the acid pit - suspicious of everyone - (the ones who are still speaking to me).

The NEW May 2022 flock of Thirteen Myna Birds has arrived! Filled with poetry and art by Abigail Denton, Darryl Shupe, Sandra Feen, Linda Umans, Janet Kinaird Parker, Ken Poyner, Marc Vincenz, Joseph Cooper, and Paul Ilechko!

"There is a tree in my backyard from which pus-filled boils hang - At night I hear creaks coming from my dresser - Torpor trapped beneath fish scales - In the middle of a cloud of expectations - the perfect synthetic Mate - I thought I could escape him but he was everywhere - there was always something unpleasant in the weeds - the racing of rabbits racing through my mind - the antichrist to her cheer section - if I can push myself through the undying light of every morning and the corrosive darkness of every night, then I can be here and do this - make a wish for yourself that she'll morph into instant dead dandelion - Rain connecting endings that nobody likes - nobody told me I would miss it so much - My eyes dominated by the vain desire to be young - the sound a grapefruit makes when pried apart - the objects so alive were still so far removed - but now spits out the seeds and core - dust is mostly made from skin cells..."

The NEW March 2022 Flock of Thirteen Myna Birds is HERE

The NEW March flock of Thirteen Myna Birds is HERE! - https://13myna.blogspot.com/

With poetry by Lorna D. Keach, Lauren Reynolds, Kristin Garth, John Grey, Derek Lake Berghuis, Jan Ball, Maria Cameron, Meg Smith, Lillian Necakov, and art by MISH!

The ticket seller is asleep in his cage - my room had no window, only white liquor and a monsoon - the one who loves you shows you the trees full of hooks - like the leaf-light of the darkest forest - A room full of shrunken heads - with a gravel crunch and the click of teeth - willing to stand there skeletal but proud, with tiny brown corpses littered at their feet - more a death sentence, than impediment - Footsteps on their way and the figure could be skeletal, could be gaunt, could be anybody - I could see you becoming prey to some larger insect or bird - a wildness I’ve tried to hide, but can barely contain - I’m compelled to shelter Barbies in a plastic house inside a wooden one I own - Programmed and predictable, we are dominated by prayer - Behind the curtains of an invisible world - why would all your meat, be covered by a flimsy skin coat? - reflecting the thin arms of bare trees - The flaming sky signed our names in blood - The porcelain lamp shattered in your hand, and left no doubt - hearts holler joyfully into the black earth - tucked into the endoskeleton of your former lover - White light creeps into your eyes, where nothing lives.

Happy 2022 from Thirteen Myna Birds!

🖤
The first Thirteen Myna Birds flock of 2022 is now upon us, offering poetry and art by Kim Malinowki, MISH, jck hnry, Wayne F. Burke, Geoff Sawers, and Peter Mladinic!
Coffins rose up - I’m cloaked in red hood—spinning - bobbing to the Earth's surface - she sits on a stool behind a plastic barrier - wears a mask just as we all do right now - my dream notes are confusing and filled with dark images - sharp, dripping canines - my inbox is filled with stark reminders - not that big a deal unless you are the one in the box - They all hate you but none understand you - Silk webs wrap half a hawthorn - I might paint my face so that my face is like a mask - bleached spine on a library shelf - A mole in the middle of my forehead grew into an eye - Blink and you'll never blink again - Don’t stop till I say Stop.

NEW! The December Flock of Thirteen Myna Birds is HERE!

The NEW December Flock of Thirteen Myna Birds has arrived! Featuring visual art by MISH and poetry by Elyse Hart - Kaci Skiles Laws - Jeremy Szuder - DS Maolalai - Jessica Purdy - Paul Ilechko - Andrew K. Peterson - Vin Whitman.

The simmering mosquito larvae - controlled by the powers of his sorrow - all stretched and making ruts - made a house a home, a home a prison - sometimes I get clocks & mailboxes mixed up - how not to get stuck - and spoiled with cigarette ends - and acid and roasted pig - a dry field, broken open - leaving behind a bitter scrawling of goodbye - I have a hole inside me where love ought to be - cold as broken glass pieces - choose to be unpicked - all the uncomfortable people - the condition that makes them laugh at inappropriate times - the people who couldn't escape - Every root tries to grab hold - blackness feathering the strings - They drown the white horse - flaunting belly until the regurgitation of death - the horse’s nostrils fill with mud

A NEW July/August Flock of Thirteen Myna Birds is Here!

Just in time for the last weekend of July launching into the first Sunday and week of August, a NEW flock of Thirteen Myna Birds has arrived! Offering poetry by Jason O'Toole, Louise Robertson, Scott Ferry, Howie Good, Carol Ellis, Vicki Iorio, and Edward Lee!

"how can i love when the howling floor keeps howling open? - sharp tooth creatures stir unseen - covered in blood, the moon twists and turns - midwifed by the angel of despair - Closer to being found dead, perhaps in this blue armchair - with the darkness of a punctured shoebox - choking in her easy chair - see leather, distressed when they look at each other’s skin - The ship malfunctions. Their sanity frays. They slowly turn against one another. - They carry betrayal in their stomachs, in that series of pouches - bursting tiny envelopes, purple-red stains - i step up to the vinyl torsos - I did not tell her it is science not secrets that make things true - The ground is littered with used paper face masks - Fire burns a smile across the sky" 🖤🔥🖤
